Breakwater Advisory is an independent third party marketing, fund placement and consulting business which provides a range of distribution-based services to Australian and offshore investment management organisations. For institutional investors, we’re a source of distinguished investment solutions.
Established in 2014, Breakwater Advisory was forged from an advisory business, founded in 2003, which has since assisted several leading investment management firms in achieving their distribution objectives.
Breakwater Advisory brings a deep appreciation of the capital allocation and manager selection process, coupled with extensive capital raising experience – to achieve desired outcomes for investors and managers alike.
We work with a limited number of quality, differentiated clients to develop and maintain mutually rewarding relationships with professional investors including superannuation and pension funds, insurance companies, statutory authorities, multi-manager/fund of funds and family offices.
Breakwater advisory is selective in terms of the investment managers it chooses to partner with, and the strategies marketed on behalf of each firm. This provides investors with confidence that each capability being represented is of institutional quality.
By partnering with Breakwater Advisory, investment managers are able to focus on their core business of producing superior investment returns, with total confidence that their distribution strategy is being prudently and effectively managed.
Breakwater Advisory also partners with investment managers who want access to the Australasian institutional capital market but who are not yet ready to establish an Australian representative office.
Breakwater Advisory was founded to provide outstanding, reliable service across all marketing related business disciplines, particularly business development, consultant relationships, promotion and product design.
We provide foreign and local investment managers with an effective and cost-efficient means to access Australasian institutional capital markets.
At its heart, our work is aimed at providing institutional investors with quality investment outcomes.
Breakwater Advisory seeks to partner with organisations that share a set of immutable business principles based on trust and delivery.
Key principles shared by Breakwater Advisory and our clients are:
Investment managers are fiduciaries, entrusted with the stewardship and management of ‘other people’s money’. It must be acknowledged that the key beneficiary of the manager’s work must at all times be their client.
Investment managers are ultimately chosen for their ability to add value in accordance with their investment mandates. Similarly, third party marketing businesses are accountable for their ability to forge and maintain effective working relationships with consultants, prospects and clients, and with the investment managers themselves.
Institutional clients look to managers to fulfil particular roles in their portfolios. This means no deviation from their stated investment style, investment in repeatable processes and effective communication – effectively, a no-surprises approach to business. From an investor’s perspective, Breakwater Advisory can be depended on for effective client advocacy – the strongest representation of their best interests.
The notion that investment in the relationship will yield results more than commensurate with the level of fees paid. Breakwater Advisory strictly limits the number of investment managers it represents to ensure a highly personalised and responsive level of non-conflicted service.
Breakwater Advisory recognises that its ‘licence to operate’ ultimately depends on unassailable ethics. We will only partner with organisations that share a similar creed, placing a premium on transparency, trust and reputation.
Breakwater Advisory is an independent business working in tandem with a limited number of best-of-breed, specialist asset managers. We value depth over breadth in our representational work.
We work with investment managers who have a clear value proposition. We’re highly knowledgeable, and therefore selective, about the products and strategies that will most likely resonate in the marketplace.
We have an unwavering commitment to our clients and institutional investors can be assured of the quality of our offerings.
We offer bespoke distribution services. Our clients think of us as a natural, fully-aligned extension of their own executive team, and we strive to have institutional investors view us in a similar light by providing them with exemplary, seamless service.

Breakwater Advisory is active in the Australasian institutional investment market, with a particular focus on Australia. Government policies dating back to the 1980’s, aimed at modernising its retirement income system, have in combination with the domestic wealth management industry propelled the Australian investment market to become the 4th largest in the world by FUM. With invested assets of over AU$2 trillion, the market is expected to grow three-fold within a decade and within this period is expected to overtake Japan to become the 3rd largest market worldwide.
